KÉKFRANKOS/BLAUFRÄNKISCH 2022

Blaufrankisch is one of our favorite varieties. Its explosively lively acids are embodied in the notes of freshly picked cherries supplemented by a touch of chocolate. A thirst-quenching wine for the lovers of the variety.

From the outset, we believe wine and art belong together. We asked seven contemporary Hungarian writers and poets to draw inspiration from the premium wines of Vylyan Winery. From the essence of poems and short stories the creating hand conjured up artistic drawings, and we now present the result to the world on the Vylyan bottles. The drawings reflect the soul of the wines on paper, as the artists see them.

You can read here the story of Kékfrankos.

It pairs well with spicy, yet not overwhelmingly heavy dishes, and also works perfectly in itself, musing on the uniqueness of the Blaufrankisch.

2022

In 2022, blooming started later than usual. The high temperatures caused the vines to catch up in terms of growth. During the summer, the low rainfall and the abundance of sunshine meant that the grapes were smaller than usual, but the ripening process was much faster. From a phytosanitary point of view, it was a very good year. The symptoms of drought damage were less pronounced in our older plantations and in our better-positioned vine yards, but of course the characteristics of the varieties and clones also played a role in this. The correct choice of harvest date was of particular importance, resulting in fresh and fruity wines of the vintage that are not overly alcoholic.

Noble wine named after Duke Montenuovo Nandor, who owned parts of our vineyards at the beginning of the 20th century. This wine is a well balanced blend with a golden mean between the full-bodied and the lively-fruity styles. Its bright, fruity upbeat is filled with diverse scents in which bourdeaux varieties come together in a harmonising accord completed with spiciness of the syrah. It’s complexity makes it a good match with many kinds of dishes, thus a favourite of the best restaurants. From the outset we believe wine and art belong together. You can read here the story of Montenouvo.

In the nose, there are notes of ripe fruits and discreet barrel spices.
The bright ruby red color is matched by lively acidity. Harmonious on the palate, supported by a ripe tannin structure.

It is a real Jolly Joker when it comes to food pairings, as the wine itself is complex and multifaceted. It goes well with heavier roasts or even a spicy vegetable stew.

2021

The unusually cool spring of the 2021 vintage was followed by abundant summer sunshine. This brought  in th ebackwardness of  grape development, so harvest dates evoked“oldtimes”. The warm summer and the moderate rainfall allowed the formation of pleasant aromas. The cooler October weather following a sunny September has contributed to the development of more vibrant acids, which will result in vibrant wines from this vintage.

WINE REGION: Villány | Gombás and Mandolás vineyards

GRAPE VARIETIES:  Cabernet franc 42%, Syrah 40%, Merlot 18%

VINIFICATION-MATURATION

The varieties and slopes were vinificated separately. Maceration on the skin lasted for 14 to 25 days. Extraction of the grape by open and later closed pumping over. The malolactic fermentation and maturation took place in barrels for 15-20 months. Barrels are made out of Hungarian oak: 80% in 225 l barrels, 20% in 6000 l casks. After blending the cuvee we matured it in steel tanks.

ALCOHOL: 14,33 %

Cabernet Sauvignon is a true world traveler who has seen a lot and knows a lot. It’s sometimes picked up and sometimes forgotten by the fads, but that doesn’t bother sauvignon. The trademark of Vylyan wines is complex, finely tuned, airy elegance and a refreshing, refreshing palate full of flavor. The nose is flinty, while the palate offers notes of blueberry and coffee, with a hint of saltiness. Ripe, velvety tannins, a balanced, harmonious wine. Decanting suits it well.

Recommended with steak or with any other meal made with beef!

2017

Another year of superlatives: the coldest winter and the earliest beginning of the harvest so far! We had the truly cold winter of our childhood memories, with long-lasting sub-zero temperatures, and precipitation, but contrary to our European „colleagues” we at least suffered no frost damage. The late May bloom was followed by a steadily warm summer, luckily with adequate precipitation. This all brought about the early harvest which commenced on 17 August, with the grapes for the Pinot Noir rosé first. The grapes proved to be ripe and intact, with a unique richness of color and excellent contents

WINE REGION
Villány | Dobogó vineyard

GRAPE VARIETIES
100% Cabernet Sauvignon

VINIFICATION-MATURATION

Grapes from the Dobogó vineyard were fermented with grape skins for 16 to 18 days and then pressed. Malolactic fermentation was performed spontaneously with wild yeast. The wine was bottled after 14-month aging in barrels. Ages of the barrels: 30% new, 30% oneyear-old, and 40% older.

Our lovable merlot captivates with its lively and concentrated character.

Intense, characterful varietal wine with silky, vibrant acidity. The fruitiness is reminiscent of ripe cherries, complemented by the spiciness of cocoa powder. An elegant wine with a long, warm finish.

Every drop is round and soul warming.

We are sure that the Villanyi Franc has a mission in the world. For us this wine represents the highest complexity that can be achieved from the Villany grapes.

The variety has set its roots in the Villany soil and has found its home here forever. As have we.

According to the renewed Villány appellation control system, “Villányi Franc” apellation is a carefully selected 100% cabernet franc – the flagship brand of the wine region.

As Michael Broadbent says, “Cabernet Franc has found its natural home in Villány.”

Villányi Franc is the embodiment of elegance and harmony.

From the outset we believe wine and art belong together. We asked seven contemporary Hungarian writers and poets to draw inspiration from the premium wines of Vylyan Winery. From the essence of poems and short stories the creating hand conjured up artistic drawings, and we now present the result to the world on the Vylyan bottles. Syrah 2017

The Syrah variety is a real mysterious mediterranean character with the elegance of a gentleman, representing strength and silkiness. This wine is round and harmonic with vivid acids and silky tannins.

The vintage of 2017 is outstandingly beautiful in the Villány region. This characteristic, single-variety Syrah also confirms this notion with a warm, deep, dark fruity atmosphere. The notes of chocolate are rather dark chocolate, pepper is rather pink peppercorn, raspberry feels like prunes in a cake with some finesse, while the aromatic notes of tobacco and cinnamon are also apparent. Calmingly smooth, concentrated with a long aftertaste, suitable for a long future ahead.

From the outset, we believe wine and art belong together. We asked seven contemporary Hungarian writers and poets to draw inspiration from the premium wines of Vylyan Winery. A perfect pair of game and beef dishes, even exotic and spicy meals or high-fat cheese, and also feels delicious with dark chocolate desserts.
